Apostrophe mayhem

Today I saw signs in a shop window stating they had new arrivals:
Kids's Hats
Ladies's Hats
and for good measure
Mens's Hats
I think this may be the worst set of apostrophes I have ever seen!

Those are very bad.
No 1 son and I went to an open day at (hopefully) his University for next year and on the Powerpoint presentation at the beginning, given by the school and college liaison officer (an English graduate, with an MA to boot) was the heading
A number of cafe's are available on campus.
"Cafe's what?" I asked myself.

It is just remotely possible that the excuse for cafe's is that it is an abbreviation of cafeterias and the apostrophe indicates the letters omitted - as in don't, won't etc? But I suspect it was just a mistake!! Katharine's example however is what you call hedging your bets (or perhaps the insipient Eastern European?).

I can't be bothered to check on Jeeves or Google, but I'm sure I'm right in saying there is a society dedicated to the CORRECT use of the apostrophe !

I have a dear doggy friend who uses them for all her plural's.....
She did a lovely set of photo's of all the classe's - both dog's and bitche's - at a recent show.......
Surely the "bitche's" must have looked a little odd to her even if the "dog's" looked OK?

I know this apostrophe thing is very annoying, but it is mere trivia when you think of the horrible news event 2days ago; don't know about anyone else but it's hard to think about anything else at the moment, horrifying beyond belief.

I love that book "Eats Shoots and Leaves" - she even provides apostrophes and little circles with lines through them for blocking out other's misplaced apostophes!!
