What I'm missing -

The traditional singing! The monotonous row of thousands of vuvuselas is awful.

Oh! I want England to win!

Why pick a West Ham goalie when Jo Hart is sitting on the bench ?

Controversial !

Because they run around like headless chickens? Because Heskey doesn't know his offside from his ****side? Because they're c**p? :x

He made one good pass, that led to Gerrard's goal. After that, he was caught offside at least 6 times, resulting in free kicks to the USA. He hasn't scored a goal in any game for months. He's a waste of space!!!

As a regular attendee at the Valley, I'm surprised you ask.

I was playing in a street procession at the time the game was on, but had predicted a USA win or at least a draw. You don't get to beat Spain and lead Brazil 2 - 0 without knowing a little about the game.

As usual, England have been hyped out of all proportion by the British press, and whatever their final position, will only disappoint the sports writers, with the exception of Barry Glendenning on the Guardian podcast.

Never mind all this football rubbish (sorry 'soccer' if you are American) - what about the Canadian Grand Prix this afternoon, with Lewis Hamilton in pole position. I also see that Nigel Mansell survived only 20 minutes of the Le Mans 24-hour race before crashing! Far more exciting than men chasing a chunk of leather!

But isn't all that motor racing rather environmentally unfriendly?

Bravo Annie. And although racing drivers are very fit (James Hunt winning Superstars anyone?) it is not something your average person can do to get/keep fit.

Husband got an iPod classic as a leaving gift from his last job and has spent the last 3 weeks transferring his extensive music collection onto it(40.84Gb and counting) and we get occasional blasts when he comes across something exciting. Bad enough while watching Midsomer Murders, but brain-destroying with vuvuzelas going as well.

I am sure that all your comments about motor racing and the environment are correct, but on a lesser scale I don't imagine that football fans flying to South Africa from all over the world have done much for the environment either, not to mention all the poor people who have been ousted from their homes to accommodate the football. And I do agree that most racing drivers are young, fit and rich - perhaps that is part of the fascination -it would be out of reach for the majority to aspire to, but there is always the exception, like Lewis Hamilton who did not come from an advantaged background, but made the grade anyway, and has remained a decent person in the process. There is the odd blip, but .......... it would be surprising if a young lad with his driving skill did not occasionally do something stupid on the road. Compare that with the crass behaviour of so many footballers, and their wives and hangers-on - need I say more? (except that if I were 40 years younger .............. !)
