Police Cadets

In the early seventies one of the CCF options was to join the Police cadets.
We had a number of trips on field days etc and also had driving lessons which were excellent. I remember spending a sunday on patrol in a panda car (as they were known then).
Do they still have Police Cadets?

Never heard of 'police cadets' - were they referred to as piglets?

Don't know about Police Cadets but we certainly had our fair share of Space Cadets.

Police Cadets must only have lasted a few years then. loringa must have been at the School in the seventies and yet does not know of them.

Not sure if many forces still enlist Police Cadets.
I left 'Housey' in 1963 and joined, what was then known as 'The Surrey Constabulary, now Surrey Police as a Police Cadet. Cadets would do all the basic training within the different departments of the Force and take their Duke of Edinburgh's awards. They would do three years as a cadet before going in as a Constable at 18/19.
It's a pity that MacLeod Senior of Coleridge B at the same time as me doesn't seem to get on this forum. He recently retired as an Inspector with the West Sussex Police and would probably be able to answer this question !

As I remember, Peter Burr (PPdeWB) was master i/c at first followed by David O'Meara (DJO'M). The main attraction was that you got free driving lessons from a police driving instructor.

Can't say I remember the police cadets between '72 and '78. I was in the "Signals" which was run by DJO'M at the time.

Hello again James:
David O'Meara rose through the 'ranks' of CCK officers becoming Contingent commander evetually at first with the rank of Major and finally as Lt-Col. He retired from the CCF some years ago (whilst I kept on as Group Scout Leader) and he retired from CH last term. As appreciation of him (written by yours truly) should appear in The Blue at end of this term, although I am not sure whether under the new arrangement The Blue (now produced annually by the School alone) automatically goes to all Old Blues. Julian would know.
Needless to say his military exploits were regarded somewhat wryly by the regulars of the Bax Castle where he was known successively as Capt Mainwaring and the Colonel.
The signals group has ceased to meet although one-time Sergeant Harrod is now in charge of the IT network throughout the school at Horsham.
