The Hertford lot only had swimming for half the year ( ie 2 terms out of the 4) in the non swimming time there was a floor laid down for volley ball and other things - I would have preferred to swim than play volleyball..

NExt to the pool was the Gymnasium - or in truth the torture chamber - I was a brilliant swimmer - strong arms and reasonably strong legs - but I could never ever get up that rope - even with all Miss Gravetts yells - I was firmly rooted at the bottom.....

That must have happened just after I left in '70 - we had swimming all year round - the pool was heated, and you stunk of chlorine for the rest of the day.

I remember swimming for 2 terms and gym I think for the other 2 terms. I also remember the old mangle outside the pool for wringing out your costumes

Only swam in the summer all the time I was there although the pool was heated.

didn't have floor over it in winter in my day though.

I too can swim for ever and climb a rope never.

The more I hear about Hertford, the more I am reminded about the Malory Towers books.

It really does sound like it was stuck in a time warp...

It was. Although we just got on with it at the time really. When I look back now I can't believe how we put up with it.
