At the end of the day, police forces are controlled by their local Police Authority.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I suspect that a lot of these authorities have now been infiltrated by a large element of the 'loony-left', which doesn't bode well for proper law enforcement.

Dare I give an opposite interpretation of this news story.
So far all that has been in the press is the information given by the driver. The Police will be prohibited to comment before this matter goes to the court due to the sub judice rule. As a young police officer I arrested drink drivers. Surprise, surprise a number of them claimed to have had only one drink and wanted to tell the whole world of their unfair treatment, I dread to think what was in that one drink. Suffice it to say that when the blood tests came back they became less voiciferous.
The only guarantee I make is that if this goes to court and the man found guilty the press will not report it (it would no longer be of interest.) If it does turn out to be as reported I will join the rest of you in your condemnation.

Apropos "Rescue of Idiots"

I was surfing on that lovely Beach South of Bordeaux --- where the last land thar rhe waves touched was the W.Indies.

There were two Red flags, a considerable distance apart,which identified the "Supervised Area"
From this you could be rescued.
If you got into trouble outside this area, you would be rescued --- but would be charged with a bill for the use of the facilities --- INCLUDING THE HELICOPTER !!!

I saw nobody surfing outside the Area !!

I agree; I was there a while back and had a problem; I couldn't find a single member of their staff (and never did).

Later I went to the checkout to pay and they started pulling staff off the checkouts and not replacing them despite the queues.

In defence of member of staff at Tesco (and Mum will back me up on this) we did a huge shop in Tesco a few days before Christmas (as you do...) it was when the snow was slushy and was the day after I spent 5 hours waiting for an x-ray at Kingston Hospital after I slipped over on the ice and landed with my full weight (and that's a lot!!) on the top of my right arm - protecting the baby from hitting the deck!

Anyway, when we got back to the car - at the far end of the crowded car park - the battery was as dead as a doormouse (do I mean a doormouse??), it wouldn't start AT ALL....

So, I went back to the Customer Service desk inside and asked if they could help. A lovely member of staff came over with his own car & jump leads and got us going - refused to accept a £20 note waved under his nose as a thank you and was just generally really nice & helpful!

I don't know if it helped that in the car were me (with sling), exhausted & stroppy 4 year old, sleeping 8 month old and my "elderly" mother.... I think he would have helped anyway....

At one point our local Tesco had a complimentary call-out to the RAC for things like that. I don't know if they still do it.

Hardly surprising; the Mail might have come up with the suggestion that, to get round the problem, the cashier might have said to the customer
"Give me a quiche!

You could have fooled me; despite being on two of the short list of at-risk conditions I got my swine flu injection just 8 days ago.

Why the delay? - the doctors' surgery couldn't get the vaccine. It is a pretty tiny practice - about 8 qualified doctors, a couple of nurses and other back up staff as well. I wonder when the two-doctor practices will get their supplies.

TBA and I use Tesco's constantly, on Fridays at our nearest, which is a "Superstore" plenty of parking, good grub and also, from time to time --- 5p off petrol !!

I once ran a Factory in Delamere Road -- Cheshunt , next to the Tesco HQ, the local Pub was , at lunchtime, full of smartly-suited, upwardly mobile Young Executives ! --- all exactly similar ! --- it gave my crowd the giggles !

Not so sure about "good grub": all too often they are "out" or we are too late for the dish(es) we choose. As for 5p off, yes, that used to be good but you need to spend £50 and I see that their pump prices are at the high end of what is available nearby so it is hardly worth it.

I find Tesco expensive; within about a mile of Tesco recently I got pineapples at 2 for 50p, excellent apples at 50p a kilo, mushrooms - a kilo for the same price ........ spuds are a problem; Maris Piper are 5.95 a bag but it is 50 kilos which would last us at least a few months, milk at £1.09 for 2.268 litres which is cheaper than Tesco's advertised price (itself not available in out local Tesco). At least my dividends were high

They wouldn't do in Sainsburys - there every member of staff from Chairman down is required to spend at least two weeks a year on the shop floor even if it is only as cleaner!

Apologies if this has been one of the links on this thread, and I missed it. In 'The Week' today, there is a report of a Postman who happened to be delivering to a frail elderly lady, at the same time as a courier was trying to deliver a parcel. The old lady was not at home. Wishing to avoid making her trek to the Sorting Office to collect her parcel, the postman signed for the delivery on her behalf and then delivered it to her himself later, when she was at home. She telephoned his superiors to say how grateful she was... but he lost his job and is now signed off sick with stress.
