I remember a slightly different version of the buttonhole story. The person being interviewed (Penny Browne, I believe?) was indeed recognised as an Old Blue because of the beauty of her bound buttonholes , but only because she also had a first class degree in her subject as well - either Maths or a Science? The interviewer felt that only CH could have produced such an unusual juxtaposition of talents.

Slightly at a tangent....but Judy Evans, who was Head Girl in the late 60s, went on to become one of the few female consultant plastic surgeons. There was a TV programme about her a few years ago, and she said that her interest in surgery, and particularly cosmetic surgery, was in part due to having been to a school that placed so much importance on needlework and sewing. I don't think she was entirely joking, either.
