PHOTOS WANTED

Post by Foureyes »

I am putting this on the General Chat rather than the CH Photos page for maximum visibility.
I am nearing completion of collecting paintings/photos of CH outfits 1552-2011, which will, I hope, be published by the Museum. I am lacking just two outfits and would be most grateful if anyone could help, please.
Boys World War Two Jacket and Short Trousers. From about 1943 to 1950-1 all Horsham boys in the Prep and juniors in the upper houses did not wear Housie uniform, but a brown tweed jacket, grey shirt, tie (colour/design not known), shorts and long grey stockings (This was due to wartime economies, clothes rationing, etc). I have photos of boys in such outfits in House photographs, but these are either seated cross-legged in the front row or standing half hidden somewhere in the middle. To match the other photos, I am seeking a good, clear picture of a boy in this outfit, standing. preferably just one in the picture; a studio portrait would be ideal, although I appreciate that not many parents would have wanted a picture of such a nondescript outift.
Girls Coatfrock. Hertford girls wore a very smart navy-blue Coatfrock from the early 1920s to 1960. I have a number of pictures of this outifit, but all are in black&white and none are of the quality to match the others. Again I am seeking a good clear picture, preferably in colour, and, if possible, of studio quality.
If anyone can help, please do NOT send me prints, which I am sure are of personal value, but if you could contact me via the Forum (or via Margaret in the office) and explain what you have, I will then reply to negotiate how you can send it to me.
Many thanks,
David

Kerren,
Many thanks. The pictures are very good - excellent depth of colour - and I had certainly not fully appreciated the pinkness of the "cherry red" and the depth of yellowness of the summer dress - no wonder the greenfly were attracted! However, at the risk of being picky, I would still like to locate good quality pics of these being actually being worn to match all the other illustrations.

David - that yellow dress is NOT the linen yellow dress of my memory - it has long sleeves and ours had short sleeves. (I think you have the b&w photo of the girls with DR and the Senior Grecian and others waiting to present the Loyal address to the new queen)

Katherine,
I had not noticed the sleeves! That makes it rather curious. You are quite right about the Coronation pic which shows the Senior Monitor (is that the right term?) with yellow dress, white gloves, white socks, brown (?) shoes, and short sleeves. I also have a pic of a line-up of six girls in 1938 in different outfits, where one is wearing a similar summer dress, although since the pic is in b&w I cannot tell what colour it was. But, the point is that it , too, has short sleeves. So where did the Hertford museum's long-sleeved dress come from???

It's also more orange than yellow - though our yellow dresses were indeed more of a deep yellow than a lemon yellow.......Perhaps its not Hertford at all, although it would have been provided to the Hertford Museum by the CH Museum, along with all the rest of the clothing except for the odd piece like the Chapel Cap.
PS David.. at Hertford the Monitresses were senior (usually Upper Sixth) girls in the Ward/House - and the Headmistress had a dedicated Monitress. The word 'Monitor' I think is male-gender-specific? The most senior people were the Head Girl and the Deputy Head Girl.
In the photograph of the steps of St. Paul's and the loyal address for the Coronation, the Head Girl was Catherine Llewellyn-Smith, elder sister to Elizabeth Llewellyn-Smith who retired several years ago as Principal of St. Hilda's College, Oxford and who is prominent in the Oxfordshire Old Blues. Useless information, I am sure!

Well spotted! Now fixed.
It was because the link which Kerren posted had http://www.chforum.com as part of the hyperlink. This works, and you can indeed chforum.com, it works the same as chforum.info - but the login is specific to the chforum.info which most people login with - so when you go to chforum.com, it doesn't recognise you're logged on (technically it views chforum.com as a different website!) hence for security you'd need to logon to both....

I have just been told by my father that he has a large folder of pictures of my great grandfathers which includes pictures from when he ran a jazz / show band at Rugby and then CH. I am unsure of dates but as soon as i have them I will look through to see if any WW2 photos as I know he was a teacher when Barnes Wallis was a pupil and may have still been there during war

Wurzel,
Barnes Wallis was a pupil at Housie 1900-1904. His daughter, Mary, is a friend of mine and if any of your great grandfather's pics include him I know that she would be grateful for a copy.

i know very little about him except he taught at Rugby then CH and lived at the very end of new road Southwater where the footpath from opposite the end of the wapplegate track came down the back of his garden. I have seen a picture of him with a group of musicians standing by the lead water tank now in front of the new science block when it was in the Science cloister

What about starting a Flickr group to host images of CH and link to them from here? Or is there one already?
