Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
No, as far as I am aware there were no individual house/ward mottos (in Latin or otherwise) at Hertford. We just had the dates of the erection of the various buildings, on the things at the top of the rainwater drainpipes (usually 1904, as I recall). Is that the same for the Horsham buildings? Must say, that I am sorry that I have never looked/noticed!

There was a belief in Sixes that our ward motto was 'Nil desperandum', which seems to follow the mood of the Horsham mottos, but I am not aware that it was in any way 'official' or whether other wards had their own mottoes.

Doesn't always work. Some 20 years ago shortly after he had fled to Northern Cyprus Asil Nadir received a watch from a UK MP with a note quoting that saying.NEILL THE NOTORIOUS wrote:Nil illegitimo carborundum ? ---- I told you I didn't "Do" Latin !

Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
Actually these are all pretty common sundial mottoes, but I'm tempted to think that whoever carved these selected them as he went along. He obviously started with the Prep, by the time he got to Thornton he was "looking to the end", and as for Peele...DavidRawlins wrote:
From Clifford Jones'
Peele Passing away.
Thornton Finem respice. Look to the end
Middleton Umbra docet. The shadow teaches
Coleridge Pereunt et imputantur. They perish and are reckoned up
Lamb Tempus abit, manet eternitus. Time is going, eternity is waiting
Barnes Umbra fugit, manet res. The shadow flies, the situation remains
Maine Dum, spectus fugit. While you watch, time flies
Prep Festina lente. Hurry slowly (more haste, less speed)
A very cheerful lot. Were there some at Hertford?
Pedants' corner: Maine should be "Dum spectas fugit".

Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
Apparently the Votum was composed in 1889 by Dr Haig-Brown, headmaster of Charterhouse, but an Old Blue. He was asked to write a Carmen; he wrote two, for the one that was rejected he wrote a Greek translation. That would have been even more difficult to sing.
I found this in a book ' More Gleanings from the Blue', compiled and published in 1895.

Wait - they've got rid of the Votum?? because it's elitist and difficult to sing??? for crying out loud. If it's an anachronism, it's certainly a glorious anachronism. They'll be getting rid of the uniform next.
I used to really like it. We did several fun and sarcastic arrangements of the music. Notably Peter Wright made a very amusing set which ended up on tape and got passed around for copying. I have it on my itunes.
Also, the Votum taught me the words "caerulaeque vestes" - supposedly "blue coats" in Latin but I bet my spelling's off!

I echo your feelings, Tim.. even if the same song at Hertford was known as the 'Carmen'.

I, also, rgret the "Passing" of the Votum -------
Particularly the line "Caeruliqui Vestis" (Spelling ?) which in my time, was invairiably sung by the School as "Testes" !--- (an interesting concept !)
This was known, by the Masters, who could do nothing about it --- and I believe, joined in !!!
Oh happy days !!

Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
My favourite phrase in the Carmen/Votum is 'et floreat ut floruit honore sempiterno', which seems to sum it all up really!

Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
One has to wonder whether the decision to can The Carmen was made by jobsworths who didn't have the benefit of a classical education and, therefore, have no idea what they were singing
Re: Does anyone know the school latin motto?
I too don't think there was a School latin motto. "Fear God, Honour the King" was indeed on the arch under which we (from the East end of The Avenue) marched towards the Dining Hall, but the spelling was "Fear God, Honor the King". I remember it being said, "Why use the American spelling?" and the answer was that in the days when that arch was errected, for the Newgate St CH, that was the standard English spelling. Only in the nineteenth century did the spelling allegedly change to follow the fashion of using a French spelling for honour and other such words. If any reader has further information on this matter, or disagrees with me, I hope s/he'll say so and why. Sid

I think that, somewhere, on another thread, I suggested that the motto "Fear God- love the Brotherhood- Honour the King" probably tends to suggest a "left Wing" tendency, if observed in that order !!
