BRISCOE CUP

Post by Foureyes »

Briscoe features in my book, Freedom We Died For You. Did anyone ever discover where that trophy is now?

The Wilkinson Cup was awarded for Music and was named after the former Director of Music who
preceded Dr. Craig Sellar Lang 1929-45, The latter was a nephew of Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of the Abdication. Changing the subject of the winning of House Trophies I remember that Thornton B in my time seemed to win the Swimming Trophy quite often.

As to Dr Lang, Bryan Magee makes a brief and unfavourable mention of him in his memoirs (would have been unprintable in Lang's lifetime).

Thornton B won the Swimming Cup in all of the seven years before I arrived, and in my first year. We were expected to win it back seven years later, but one boy didn't turn up, and we were disqualified in that race (we would have won the cup even if we'd been last in the race).

C.S.Lang ------ 1929 -- 1945 ?
Were these the years he was director of Music at CH ?

My memory is (Of course) failing, but I thought he was there when I left in April 1946.
If I am mistaken, who suceeded him ?

Dr. C.S. Lang retired at Easter 1945 and was succeeded by the Rev. William Cecil Mcvicar Cochrane who had been the assistant Director of Music since 1937. He left in 1957. He once gave me sixpence for being runner up to Paul Delight who won the Divinity Prize in Form 3A in 1943.

Not by 1955, he didn't. Maybe in his younger days. He certainly had a red face. (Or should we say: florid complexion?)

A check through my back numbers of The Blue reveals that Thornton B won the inter House Swimming Cup in the following years. 1934-40, 1942-44, 1950-56, and 1969-70 . All dates inclusive. Is there anyone out there who can provide a list of all House Trophy winners since 1902?
Did things change somewhat when the Senior and Junior Houses were introduced?
