I am travelling back to Spain on the ferry this week, and as usual had to give my UK passport details. Additionally, this time, I was asked if I had residency in Europe, the country and the expiry date. Curiously they didn’t ask for my residency number.
Going in and out of Sweden they now scan my Spanish residency card and do not stamp my passport.
Passing through the USA recently, people before me were finger printed but I was not, but on my return, I was. When asked why, the official said that he just obeyed the system.
Never understood why the USA doesn’t allow transit without going through immigration and then security again.
Each to his own, I suppose.

E.g. a British person in an emergency situation in Burkina Faso, which has no UK embassy, can use the Indian, Canadian or South African embassy there.
Thanks, may I ask why you chose Burkina Faso as an example?
Because Burkina Faso is one of the very few countries in the world with no UK embassy :)
