Don't know much about gyn/obs at NDDH, but they were brilliant when my tounger daughter miscarried at 2 am while they were staying with us on their way home to Ireland.cj wrote:Glorious Devon! It's a great place to holiday in. And live. Especially North Devon. Admittedly the traffic in Barnstaple is hideous, but the new bridge will hopefully take some of the cars out of the centre. My younger daughter was born (just) in NDDH in Barnstaple. Does that make her a Devon Maid?midget wrote:Glad to see you are coming to BARNSTAPLE -home of the traffic jam and 15 charity shops.AKAP wrote:Australia

The advantage of retirement over self employment.
For anyone thinking of holidaying in this area and doing daft things on cliffs, or floating out to see on a lilo, we have the Chivenor rescue helicopter, air ambulance and good A&E.
Enjoy your hols!

Oh dear, sorry about that! Um, we're going to Stratford-upon-Avon for our holiday.
(See how interested everyone is though, judging by the number of posts since we went out for tea and got back!! Maybe we should start a childbirth thread. It is after all perfectly natural and wonderful etc. Anyone given birth during a visit to CH?)

My cousin lives very near to Barnstaple, having moved there from West Sussex about 2 years after we moved to Horsham from Devon!midget wrote:Glad to see you are coming to BARNSTAPLE -home of the traffic jam and 15 charity shops.
Do you think he might have been telling us something??
(And it was the first time for about 20 years that I`d lived near enough to a relation to pop in for coffee and a chat! ...oh well....)

No, No and NO again. An E111 card is totally inadequate. It merely entitles you to the same medical cover as a national would get. In most EU countries you have to pay for everything medical and then claim some but not all of that back. That "some" can vary from nothing to 90% depending on the country, the treatment, the drugs, the phase of the moon, whether the official's dog is happy .........Great Plum wrote:Not as far as I know - it is strongly recommended... The only thing you need is an E111 in Europe...Vonny wrote:I thought you had to have it if you travelled abroad?Ruthie-Baby wrote:Wow. I've never bothered with travel insurance.
You still have to have the cash to pay on the spot in many cases - OK in theory you don't but ....
E111 does not cover someone coming over to be with you, getting you or your corpse back to the UK, any treatment extra to that required to keep you just alive, your stolen wallet, having to get back early because great aunt Ethel has caught a chill, missing the flight because said great aunt Ethel has died and you have to dig the grave, loss of deposit / full payment because you are ill / injured ...............................
No. You must get Travel Insurance because only that will ensure that the calamity which would have befallen you will descend like the wrath of God upon the person behind you.
BTW; my travel insurance has a clause that if you use an E 111 then the excess on the policy does not apply - they pay anything not covered by the local health service without deduction. It also means that you can get that vacuous blonde / Arnold S. to come and bathe your fevered brow.

As a footnote: shop around - travel agent policies are not always the best. Because of the amount of travelling we do, (just back from 7 weeks Australia, NZ, SE Asia and we may be abroad for a further 6 months) we need such policies and we have a company which has proven itself to us in two countries and in different circumstances; for name and address (and I don't have any connection other than as a customer) send me a message
Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

Lloyds Bank account holders can get "free" family worldwide holiday insurance for a family of four. We pay £15 per month to operate this account but it gives us:
1. Free full travel insurance as above for a family of four
2. Free AA 5 star membership
3. Free mobile phone insurance (2 phones)
and a host of other benefits include interest on any credit balance and an allowable overdraft of £250 without interest payable - regrettably beyond that, you do have to pay interest!

I have posted a notice of interest to anyone thinking of using timeshare. It is on the business section of the forum though it is not strictly a business - I am merely the unpaid chairman of the consumer side of the timeshare industry. Perhaps I should have posted it here instead??

Re: Holiday destinations?
I seem to remember driving past a very large lake not that far (about 15 miles) from Perugia, which I think had beaches on it!bap wrote:Where are you going on holiday this year?
I'm taking my family to Perugia, Italy. It will be our first Summer holiday that isn't beach based so I'm not sure how the teenage kids will cope...
Just before Easter we're going to Boobies Bay, near Padstow in North Cornwall, for a few days.
