Just met two young Blues
Thanks to this Forum and the system of PMs, Rachel, daughter of Mrs C, and her friend Eileen are working on the Ffestiniog Railway at the moment, for their DofE Gold. I met them both this morning, very quiet girls - perhaps overawed by what they had taken on! Eileen has been out on the buffet car today, her first train has just returned. Rachel is working in the café and was at the till when I went down for my morning coffee.
They are staying at our Hostel, the Warden, at the moment, is one Ben Rosen who starts as Director (?title) of the CH Theatre in September. He was glad that he would meet a couple of pupils before starting there.
I do so hope the girls enjoy their stay, I feel horribly responsible for their coming here!!

QUIET???????
I`d like to thank Katharine for all her help - I`m sure they wouldn`t be there if it wasn`t for the CH connection!!
I just hope they behave themselves with those French lads!!
(and I hope Ben doesn`t change his mind about coming to CH now he`s met 2 Blues!!)

I know Rachel and Eileen as they were second formers when I was on my deps (or was it my grecians?!). both are really nice people and im sure when they get to know you they will be less quiet

Come now, JR you really should know that is is NEVER a new anorak!J.R. wrote:Shouldn't you be putting the finishing touches to the name tag on Rachel's new anorak, Mrs C ???
On another tack, surely, even today, a CH girl can sew on her own nametape and not expect Mum to do it.

I should obviously have sent my daughter to CH, she resolutely refuses to sew on as much as a button (though her brother does) but she does do the most wonderful cross-stitch pictures so it is not an allergy to needles or thread.Katharine wrote:Come now, JR you really should know that is is NEVER a new anorak!J.R. wrote:Shouldn't you be putting the finishing touches to the name tag on Rachel's new anorak, Mrs C ???

I suspect it would never get sewn on if Mum refused to do it!!Katharine wrote:Come now, JR you really should know that is is NEVER a new anorak!J.R. wrote:Shouldn't you be putting the finishing touches to the name tag on Rachel's new anorak, Mrs C ???

Seriously though, it is one of the assets to a Hertford education that however academic you were you did learn to sew. It took me a very long time to do decorative needlework rather than functional, but in the last fifteen years I have gained great pleasure from embroidery.

The girls have now finished their time at the railway - thoroughly enjoyed themselves (although I suspect I`ve had the somewhat edited version of events!!!), and are talking about going back.
As they`ve had their D of E record books filled in I can only assume that at some point they did what they were there to do!
Once again, many thanks to Katharine, without whose help this would probably never have got off the ground.

Glad to hear the girls enjoyed themselves. I think we do have a good reputation with DofE students and most weeks in the summer we have a few. Some do return after their first visit, because they have so enjoyed the social scene on the railway. (Not all are anoraks, JR, some just enjoy the life, and the people here not particularly the trains.)
