I remember my housemaster getting suspicious of us taking out certain round numbers from pocket money on a Wednesday or Saturday lunchtime. If they ever spotted a £3.50 (going rate for a quarter of vodka) you could be sure they would keep an eye on you that night. The same applied for £2 (the then price of 10 cigarettes). Now, that is the sign of a good housemaster.
