Grecians Club

Post by Vonny »

I'm enjoying a few ciders tonight which has got me thinking about the Grecians Club. A pint in 1987/8 was 70p (paid for in chits) - how much do they charge in there now for a pint? Does anyone know when the club opened and was in around in the days of J.R. & Co?

The Club first opened in 1973 (July 8th, to be exact).

Certainly nothing like that in my day, Vonny.

I never made Grecian, and even Grecians were subject to expulsion if caught under the influence, if memory serves.

Incidently, and I'm sure JH in sunny Spain will confirm, on the band trip to Heacham in the Summer of '62 or '63, we were going out in the evening and getting slightly oiled on good old Mild beer. Cost 9d a pint !

Less than 4p in this modern money of ours. Oh, how times change.

20 Peter Styvesant (sp ?), around 1/9d, (8 1/2 p !)

I guess one of the ideas behind opening the club was to allow alcohol in moderation in a legal place to those old enough. However, it still did not stop people from obtaining alcohol (wine and spirits in particular) from other sources. They only sold cider, lager & bitter along with soft drinks in the club as far as I can remember.

I was lucky - being born in September meant I had the maximum time I could have had in the club. One of my friends who was in my year but 18 months younger than me only got 3 months or so in the club and she was a school monitor and house captain

I heard from a reliable source that the club is no more. Apparently the council where a bit suspicious of the large number of licenses to serve alcohol that a boarding school required (theatre etc.) net result, no more club

I am reliably informed by the grecian sitting next to me that the grecian's club still exists and now serves FREE alcohol on themed nights. Of course membership has to be paid for.....

I`m sure this discussion has been had before elsewhere on the forum - I`m just not clever enough to find it!

It was always a really difficuly choice . . .

stay and do some work in second prep - or go to the club for three halves (what do you mean - no of course we always stuck the the three halves limit ~ cough cough cough). Around 12p per half pint I seem to remember in our days.

So if the club doesn't open every day any more, does that mean no more ploughmans lunches on Sundays ? They were much better than the boiled sparrow that used to be served up most week for Sunday lunch in the dining hall.

Snakebites were forbidden to be made in my day. Seems rather harsh considering some people were drinking a bottle of vodka (or, one one rather notorious evening, their own urine!) round the back of the club. And I never ever got to have a Sunday ploughman's because of band practice.

It seemed to go a bit pair shaped after I left...

Btw, if you can find the correct Blue, there is a great picture of my dad (with long hair) drinking one of the first pints...
