Seems the 'banter' hasn't moved on much since the '70, then!

Actually the only time I ever got sent off was by Bogey Fryer during an inter-house match. I informed the touch judge that, in my humble opinion, he was not entirely qualified to fulfill his duties, and that perhaps he should understand that a ball grounded on the goal-line by a member of the attacking team does in fact mean that a try should be awarded.

Actually, my exact words were more akin to the "useless" phrase used by Mark Robinson.

something to do with his ancestry then and presumably that he needed to see an optician as well.

Thought I'd better clarify for those who don't know that Andrew Higgins is the OB not Robinson.

...... and I thought Rugby Union players respected their linesmen !

...Unlike Association Football, where 'lino's' often have their parentage questioned !

I don't think I will ever forget the shock I got when, as a third former squit, I was introduced to rugby. Being a Londoner, I had only ever played football to this point.
With my build I was a certainty for the pack and so I encountered my first scrum down.........
I was playing tight head prop and the hooker threw his arm around me, I thought "hang on son, your being a bit friendly aren't you!" But what the heck, I better show willing. Then before I could get over the first shock I found this shoulder against my backside and an arm thrust betwen my legs grabbing at the waist band of my shorts!
I didn't know any better so I gave him a back heel in the face. He asked for it grabbing where even my mother can't go!
Next thing I know, I am sent off and told to wait outside the housemaster's study. I got a lecture explaining rugby and had to go to the sicker and apologise to the guy with a wider nose.
Oh the joys of rugby.

A Leagues v. Col. B if I remember correctly - gave us a great boost to see your departure... :D

This reminds me of a cup-ties match which Maine A was playing in on my Grecians... (Andrew Higgins may well have been playing for Thorn A if my memory serves me correctly).

We had been watching the game, refereed by a current RFU ref (who also teaches at the school) when the Maine A house captain went up to the ref at half time and offered him his glasses...

Oh the happy hours I spent dutifully running with the pack in the forlorn hope that we night actually get somewhere near the ball. I only touched the ball twice in 3 years of rugby in Mid B. The first time I found myself suddenly and very unexpectedly holding the ball only to find two packs landing ontop of me....Stauff that for a lark!
The second time, I remember the first so I booted it as hard as I could back at our own tryline, The ball sailed all the way to the Thorn A touchline. I was bl**dy knackered by the time we all got to it again.

I tried to keep away from the ball... alas the spots genes did not run in my family!
