We did get coffee about twice a term for breakfast in the 40's and 50's. It was a considerable improvement on the tea. I wonder if it (coffee) might have been made with Camp coffee (liquid extract in a bottle for you youngsters).kerrensimmonds wrote:COFFEE?!
I am almost certain that in my time the only coffee we had was our own, which we were allowed to brew in the House kitchen when we were in the Study (i.e. UVI). I don't remember having school coffee - but then the old grey cells are wearing out!

THANK YOU! Yes I did win the auction.........so this will be a very special addition to my collection of CH memorabilia, mainly won on eBay. These include medals, buttons and two postcards written by the Hertford Headmistress in the 1920's as well as numerous books, plain postcards etc. etc.
But this is special..........although it was a bit hairy. As of today I realised I was bidding against someone who is clearly not an Old Blue but obsessed with cups etc. for drinking from. I got quite scared, and increased my behind-the-scenes auctionsnipe to a quite ridiculous sum, to ensure that I won the bowl. In the end.. Stout Party must have collapsed.
I am speaking at the Caledonian Old Blues FD lunch next week, and this will have pride of place in my visual aids!
I am so looking forward to receiving it.....and to wondering if it actually came from Hertford or Horsham and, if the former, whether in some former life I myself actually did drink from it!

Ermmmmmm Talk about being played out in the full glare of the media - etc. etc. etc!
I am sure that the b*gg*r who caused me last day palpitations is not an Old Blue..........though I had wondered about the wisdom of bidding for this so openly and announcing it via the CH Forum!
But I am really really really pleased that it has gone down to me - and if anyone wants to look at this precious and wonderful bowl in the future, then (for a ---- modest---- fee!) I will be happy to oblige.

You were indeed very brave to advertise this bidding in what is effectively a public place. I was very, very tempted to bid when you gave us the link to the item! In fact it was only that you were an OB that stopped me, and that you'd been so open about it.
I do hope you give it a good home!

Don't worry.. it will have an excellent home. It will match two plates which my mother bought (when the patterned ones were sold off in the early 1960's) and which now hang in my study.
Thank you those who were tempted but hung back!
Some of my memorabilia from eBay (e.g. the two postcards written by Norah Craig, Headmistress in the 1920's) are already photographed an on the CHA website.

For those interested in kiff bowls the topic was considered in an earlier thread. See:
