I also chose a concordance rather than a prayer book, and both it and my bible are still in their gold boxes. Btw, are the bibles still leatherbound?

They were in 95.

Your father must be my vintage (1947), so if I have a gold box for the Bible, I am sure he must have got one. Mine is still in the box and has only been taken out occasionally. Your Dad probably read his and threw away the box.

Yeh, my Dad'll be 60 in march- he was in Prep B and Lamb B. I'll have to ask him about the box. I think he still has his largesse too, but no longer has his broadie... he thinks he may've sold it! He did have some housey buttons too, but felt guilty one day and posted them back.
He has some amusing memories of unscrewing chairs and marching to tea with a pot of homemade jam in his hand, haha...

I think the new bibles are immitation leather...

When I left in 1999 I got the bible and prayer book.

I found them when unpacking yesterday and are now on the shelf and dusted!

My Bible was in a gold box which unfortunately became water damaged (by the Fire Brigade) when I had a house fire in 1990. So I had to ditch the box but fortunately it protected the Bible itself.
In my time (1966) the Monitresses were invited to ask for either a Prayer Book or a Concordance - I chose a Prayer Book, and it is still in the red box (though rather tatty now, through years of use!) in which it was presented to me (it must have been in a different place when the house caught fire!).

Sometimes on eBay one finds an older Bible (e.g. presented in the 19th Century) which has the Prayer Book bound within it. And sometimes its brown leather, not black - though that could be the effect of ageing, I guess.

Joing in a bit late, but if I remember correctly, evryone recieved a bible. Button grecians received in addition the prayer book

Alas, no.

Those of us who did not stay the course left Hertford with no bible or prayer book - just DR's parting words in our ears.

Or perhaps it was only I who missed out. Liz, are you back from Crufts? Were you presented with anything?

I'm still not sure, since she must have been glad to see the back of me, why she couldn't have summoned up a positive statement to farewell me with

Even 'Glad to see the back of you. Do not darken our grounds with your presence ever again' would have been better than the rather sulky 'You know that you'll never make anything of yourself now that you are leaving' that she uttered.

Further back on this thread we had a discussion on who did and who did not get Bibles. We ended up (I think) with the theory that it was everyone who stayed through to the end of their secondary education (even if they left a month or so before the very end). Those who were Monitresses (at Hertford) or Button Grecians (at Horsham) also had the choice of a Prayer Book or Concordance, in addition to the Bible.

I received a prayer book (as well as the bible) but I was not a button grecian.

I was a house monitor but other than that no distinguishing features
