Local Essex info & advice , please

Post by Euterpe13 »

Hello all -

I'm currently fairly far along with a job offer in Leigh-on-Sea. Are there any local OBs ? Any comments on quality of life/ lack of same ? I went there as a child, but that was last century ...

Would have to move with chattels et al - how difficult would it be to find a reasonably-priced 2-bed rental in the area ? Also, would it be best to use a spanish or an english removal company ?

Any feed-back welcomed - this, if it goes through, is fairly imminent.

Thanks for any help

Bloomin 'eck Barbara.
Are you really thinking of relocating to the UK - AND to Essex?
Is it to be near your Mum, or.......?
I wish you good luck but personally have no knowledge of house prices, desirable areas in which to live in Essex.
This County is usually the butt of e mail and other jokes, though......
My advice (such as it is...) is to take care!
If Sussex should appeal however, let me know!

Surely it's not that bad ??? Anyway, chav-watching could be fun - better than the sad offerings of the tv, surely....

It's a very interesting job prospect, and possibly a good career move - but I wondered whether the cost of living or accomodation were not too high.

I've reached a glass ceiling here, and the only way to progress is to move.

I have some friends in the village who visit her mother in Canvey Island quite frequently. They will be there for Xmas.
I will ask them their opinion.

"You can tell by the smell 'cause it stinks like hell, it's Sarfend by the Sea" - seriously you are close to Southend and in summer the fish and chip and similar establishments can be smelt half a mile away.

For a start, you won't be able to use that name - it'll be "Babs" or worse.

Leigh on Sea - the posh bit of Sarfend, right by the mudflats - where they are so rich they even have (holey) soles on their trainers and you can't find an Essex girl for chavs.

Quality of life - well there are the mud flats if you want to go to the beach, there's the pier (not sure if it is all back in use since the last storm / fire / rough-house). There's a casino - lose all your dosh, and my friendly copper, stationed there, says don't go on Southend front at night.
It was bad in the days of the Mods and Rockers - the current youngsters are trying to be one up on them.

Was there middle of last week - lots of shops but packed out with 15 - 16 year olds, many with their babies, who should have been in school / working but weren't. I've heard that there are a lot of East Europeans / refugees there but minimal evidence seen.

Every street corner seems to have it's speed cameras - saw 4 on one lane of one road within 20 yards the other day - two fixed cameras pointing at each one and a police van with two cameras covering the same 20 yards of road. (IMHO that is real terrorism - the type TB should be fighting)

Seriously, Leigh on Sea is a bit better - see final comment.
2 bed rental? Should be possible. "reasonable" - you must be joking; my son has one here (I'm 15 miles away) at 750 pounds per month plus all bills, council tax .... (and it is always let). I expect Leigh on Sea would be a bit cheaper. You are going to need all sorts of evidence of who you are and that you can and will pay the rentals - peeps are pretty hot on that now. Do remember that the entire area is a dormitory for people working in the City of London for (allegedly) fantabulous wages so demand and prices are high.

Spanish v Brit removal company? No idea but from what I've seen in Cataluna / France they should probably be cheaper because their overheads/margins are lower. However, a Brit Co can store the goods when they get here - a Spanish one possibly could not.
OTOH if you can find a lorry going back empty deals can be done (long distance drivers sometimes do search round for return loads) If you can be here and arrange it there is the Big Yellow Box company - where you can put your goods into storage under your lock and key until you can move in.

I'll see what I can find out on Monday; there is (seriously) no way I would contemplate going there at a weekend - far too packed.
Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

I don't know the area myself particularly well however I have a neighbour from Southend, not too far away, which definitely has a chav element and is one reason he relocated to the comparitive tranquillity of the Patio of England aka Kent.

Regarding rents for a two bedroom place I think you will be lucky to get anything for less than £500 a month and that is probably an underestimate. Mary will know more with her estate agency experience, but it is probable that you will have to find a deposit of at least one months rent and there will probably agents fees on top! A friend of my brother in law in her mid thirties was even asked to find a guarantor before she could rent a place recently so that might also be a possibility given that you have been abroad for some time.

I wish you the very best of luck whatever you decide to do.

Rental property- well we have a small modern 2 bed semi in Horsham which is let for £650 a month (not that we see most of it!)- and thats less than some similar properties here . I wouldn`t like to say how Horsham prices compare with Essex though.
Internet search of local agents would be a starting point though.

Good luck with job if it`s what you want!

This has to be the 'cue the Blonde Essex girl jokes !'

Seriously, as much as I adore England, Essex would probably be the last County of choice if we had to move !

Having been to see 3 houses, we are going back to look at 1 tomorrow, it was a lovely Victorian cottage that needs a little work i.e new kitchen and carpets but its so cosy and homely and a huge garden. 270ft so we can chickens!!!!!

JR you are totally out of date: Essex girls had a bit of nouse. With modern educational standards the classic Essex Girls have degeberated into chavs.
