A very Belated Happy New Year to all and sundry - just think in another month we can celebrate the Chinese New Year and in 8 months the Jewish New year - anyone know of any other New Years within a "nominal" year?

Buddha Day, also known as Wesak Day, commemorates his birth, enlightenment and his death - presumably not all in the same year.

We used to have fantastic processions of devotees carrying paper lotus flowers with actual nightlights lit inside them. Each temple or group had different uniforms and different styles of lanterns each year - one of the most impressive processions in the Sarawak calendar!

Orthodox Christians work to a calendar that is 2 weeks behind us, so they celebrate Christmas when we are at Epiphany, ergo, new year must have just passed for them.

A New Heaven and A New Leigh-on-Sea

Barbara, I make the prediction that once you're at Leigh-on-Sea, it will be known for it's new Euro-glamour, and all those Essex joke books will be have to be discarded!
