Thanks for the link about religion at CH, I'm reading it now and it does seem to answer all of my questions.

I probably will try and keep up with this site once I am there and probably after since I am a hardcore internet user ( one of my main goals once i'm there. Use net less ). At my current school everyone in my year is laughing saying that I will be an old Grey ( practically the same thing, school is called 'The Grey Coat Hospital' funnily nicknamed as greycoats so it was a tad scary seeing the nickname of CH' ) so I would love to one day say i'm an old blue.

I actualy tried to get it off youtube.com ( rock school) but that didn't work out very well, just managed to get a strange video of boys from CH climbing some stairs! but if it doesn't show school life then that is fine.

You've probably spotted the varying ages of regular contributors on here, including old fogeys like me !

My days at CH were alongside diptheria, ricketts, small-pox and the dreaded thrashings from saditic housemasters !

ok....thats a tad worrying, or at least it would be if I wasn't sure that you were joking. ( at least I hope you were ).

I think it's great that so many people manage to keep in touch and reminisce about school even though they attended [insert number here ] years ago. That really says something about the quality of the school.

Can anyone tell me why they were only letting Girls in for New Deps 07. I never actualy did find out, I think I was feeling too sorry for the couple of boys that turned up on the open day.

Probably because the boys who are still in Thornton will be spread through the other houses in September , taking up the space that new deps would normally fill.

Hi Gemma,

I was a new dep in 2000! It was strange at first but soon got into it. Living in boarding school environments for most my life i kinda knew what I was getting into (my dad is head of D&T at CH and worked at other schools during childhood)

Many of your questions have been answered i see, all i can say is be yourself and don't worry if you don't want to get involved in everything thats going! There is i feel a lot of emphasis on you to be all singing all dancing all academic wonder!!!! Do what you want to do and enjoy yourself, its amazing experience. Without having done the whole boarding-learning to cope slightly on my own i dont think i would have found going to uni as easy as I did.

If you have any questions dont be afraid to get in touch-im more than willing to answer any questions you have.

Oh no, well I'm certainly not that and if anyone expects me to be then they are going to be sadly dissapointed. I dont play instruments and I'm tone deaf and have no coordination.

As an old fogey who joined CH aged 9, 50 years ago, let me too add my welcome!
The issues you raise about iPods and laptops were not even a twinkle in anyone's eye when I was at school (in fact at an Old Blues' Day four or five years ago, at Chapel Choir Practice before Evensong, I was stunned to see [school] choir members dashing into Chapel in ones and twos, at the last moment - and then emptying their pockets of their mobile phones which they turned off and placed on the ledge in front of them. In my time we filed down to Chapel in an orderly fashion - and, you guessed it, mobile phones had not been invented!).
You will however be joining a supportive and caring community which is unchanged over more than 500 years in that regard - the ethos of the family of Christ's Hospital has never changed and I hope that when you leave school (no doubt exhausted!) in July 2009 you will be proud to be part of its history.
The school does have a great history and if you are interested in the historical story of the Foundation from a girl's perspective, PM me your snail mail address and I will gladly send you a little booklet written by the Headmistress of the Girls' School in my time (the Girls' School used to be in Hertford but closed in 1985 when both schools were merged on the Horsham site).
I hope that you will be very happy -and that despite the busyness when you are at school - you will keep in touch with us from time to time! Your joining this Forum even before you are enrolled is a great start!

Thanks a lot. I suppose that joining the forum early was just a way of getting answers to some of my questions but I'm sure I'll stay on here for ages to come.

well hello!
Amy (blondie) and I started in 2000 at the same time and are still mates, so the friendships you make end up being pretty solid. It does seem as though the questions you had have been answered, so thats all good! I was a bit worried about taking my stuff there but everyone is very trusting and theres alot of mutual respect, so no worries about that! And yes, the small class thing is nice! My largest class was 6 in my upper sixth.

If you are referring to Greycoat Hospital Westminster my sister is an Old Girl as is Sarah Greene one time TV presenter.

Yes, definitely referring to The Grey Coat Hospital in Westminster, current school and has been for the last 4 and a half years. Thankfully I get to leave in a couple of months and become an old grey.

Do you still wear hats as part of the uniform?

My sister met up with Sarah Greene at a reunion and Sarah referred to my sister (who was a prefect /monitor) forever telling her to put her hat on!

I have never heard of a hat for the uniform and I can safely say that I have never worn one.

There is a Grey Blazer, made of carpet material that stinks when its wet. Normal grey pleated skirt, shirt and jumper in grey, maroon, or dark blue for year 11.

What year did your sister go to GCH?

1967-1974 I think! She started an academic year early so she might have stayed on until 1975. Her name was Alison Miller and she was Deputy Head Girl. Catherine Sider (?spelling) was Head Girl if I remember rightly.
