They are in the process of carrying out a revaluation though and if you've improved your home or have a nice view then you will be stuffed apparently! The valuers also will allegedly be permitted to enter your property forcibly.
Help! I have the best view in England!!

.... but I thought they had decided not to proceed with this revaluation .... ????

A great view is so subjective though. Even Jonathan (Dave's son) went to CH because the view couldn't make up for the distance to same age company.

We live almost opposite the local girls grammar school so my sons think that we have a great view, my daughter and I are much more impressed that my brother-in-law lives within walking distance of John Lewis.

I showed a woman a house yesterday which is in an idyllic setting, on the edge of a big estate, next to a bridleway and views into woods. It would kill me with boredom, and she wanted fields to overlook.

An increased income tax instead would be much more fair.
No, it just looks that way.

Consider a Mr. Smith, who owns a £300,000 house free and clear. He does a little work here and there to pay the bills, but pays very little income tax.

Ms. Jones rents next door in a house of the same value, but has £300,000 invested. She uses the proceeds to pay the rent.

She also pays a lot more income tax, even though she lives in a similar house and has the same level of assets.

A tax on property goes some way to redress that balance.

Council tax is needlessly complicated: not least because it's a tax on occupation, not ownership. But throwing all the taxation eggs into one basket would be even worse. Sorry.

I have neither a house nor an investment, and I don't directly know anyone with either, certainly not to that value anyway.
And that handy 300 000 was someone's income once!
So I still stick with my plan. Which btw would be to scrap ALL taxes, and start again with a nice proportionate income tax :) Then I would be happy.

Apparently, the land tax on paper shops in Eire is very, very low.
