Just had a letter from my local (French) council. Last year's summer dryness has been declared a disaster so I am getting a refund on my rates on the "potentially productive" fields. It works out at almost 50% of the total rates on land and 10% of my annual rates!

The French bureaucracy can be very honest in that way - when I signed up for e telephone line I was warned that it would take 5 days (including a weekend). In fact they tried to connect it on the 4th day but couldn't get a ringing tone so came here (it's 45 minutes by car) to investigate. It turned out my telephone receiver was faulty but they still fined themselves 2 months line rental because the connection took longer than their target figure.

BTW Barbara, it is 18º, cloudy and windy. At least the rain has gone away for today. (I'm 3 hours drive from Barca)

But think how much better this is for your skin. You will just be rusty instead of tanned.

After years of being told to 'Slip (on a tea shirt), Slop (on the sunscreen), Slap (on a hat), and 'to stay under a tree between 11 and 3', Australian scientists are now reporting cases of ricketts within a population that is not being exposed to enough sunlight to produce sufficient Vit D.

Since I am sure that I am exposed to more South Australian sunlight merely making one trip to or from the car than I was during an entire Pommie summer, I would be very interested to reanalyse their raw data.

We had sun in Devon today - admittedly interspersed with cloud - but it was dry so we went to the park for the first time in ages, and I got sunburned!! Arms, face and decolletage. I couldn't work out what it was at first - it was itchy and I thought it was a reaction to alcohol, until my very clever hubby pointed out the glaringly obvious, that yes! I was p!ssed and sunburned.

We too have sun, but tempered by the near gale that's been blowing for days. We had the first of the broad beans for lunch, but I fear the runners have been blown half-way to Tavistock. Keep your eyes open for them cj!

33 degrees tonight at 7.30pm. Sun all day but thunder clouds look like they will roll in; that is pretty common round here though I don't know if it will be as sunny tomorrow. Pool is nice and warm - over 80º or whatever that is in furrin.

Went round the market this morning and got some cherries (for a coulis and to store in alcohol plus kirsh), apricots (for jam), a kilo of huge prawns (partly for tempura, partly curry, partly salad) for 3 quid etc,. followed by a leisurely and alcoholic lunch with friends.

Luvverly, luvverly this is the life and we have six empty places at present.

The sun is shining here, as it does pretty much every day of the year.
