That is so gross. If I'd had any breakfast it would be all over the screen now Image . Thank God we're only going to Kent for our holiday where the most frightening thing to be seen is me in the morning. What a lovely contribution to the forum, Vonny!

They say it was picked up in Costa Rica.
As I have been going to Costa Rica since 1970 and never had a problem, I wonder where they were.

I couldn't quite bear to watch the maggot extraction, but thanks for the thought, Vonny!

cj, there are frightening things in Kent... lots of them... but I don't want to spoil your holiday...

fortunately these things USUALLY occur in foreign climes
(but to prove the opposite, a work colleague of my wife was cleaning out some leaves under a tree in Essex and had to be rushed to hospital - he had disturbed an angry adder. (He made a full recovery).

Where I worked at one time an English family with a young baby came to live next door. Unfortunately and against all the rules they put some clothes over a bush to dry, the bug got onto the clothes and from there into the baby's arm. These things are well known - they travel under the skin (you can even see them) to the tear duct from which they fall from the body. However, they itch and if they are damaged the poison can kill. My neighbour's baby had to have its arms tied up for a week or so so it couldn't scratch.

Before I went to Ghana as a VSO, many moons ago, I had to go to an orientation course. One of the lecturers covered nasties such as this. The speaker had a way of chuckling and saying 'If you don't listen to me, you'll come home wearing a wooden shirt, you will!' We were told to cut the head off a snake that bit us and take it with us (for identification purposes) when we went for First Aid - while I still remember the advice I have never had to use it!

I was on that course when the first men were on the moon (it started the day after they had landed and we were still there when they returned safely). That is part of my memory of preparing for Ghana.
