Bad timing!

Hello everyone!
This is my first post on the website and I have a sense of having timed things really poorly. On my first visit to the wesite last night I was rather excited to find that there is another hertford old girl of my era in Headcorn
(not the largest and likeliest place). I excitedly posted an email and then went back and found out how to read posts and discovered that Angela ( Munch) has just moved to Devon or somewhere.

Sorry to have missed you, Angela - I was very briefly looking forward to a coffee and chat (there's always a lot to say about the horrors of Hertford!) at Curds and Whey (the best coffee in Kent). Just in case you're interested, I live in Church Walk in a very wobbly house, which you may possibly have walked past.

So - has anyone else experienced this vexing sort of 'just missed' occasion.

I look forward to hearing from you - although I am about to go away for a fortnight. Maybe timing just isn't my forte!

You're right - Munch is now a DOG (Devon Old Girl - which presumably makes you a KOG?).

In our case, the miss is as good as a mile. Munch's father-in-law lives in the village we left 2 years ago! OBs are like rats - you are never further than a few feet away from one (or someone with a connection to CH).

I haven't done anything to do with the school for years (apart from taking my younger daughter to the seslection for a sixth form place, which she then turned down as CH looked too spartan!), so it's strange to be getting in touch again. there doesn't seem to be an association in kent as the Kent COBs seems to have given up. I almost think I might go to the carol service, but haven't quite decided,

If you remember Munch, you must remember Alex Thrift, Mary McDonagh and Caroline Barrett, all the year after Munch in 6's, (and all on here) and possibly me, the same year as Alex and Co,. in 2's

There is also a YOB (blondie97 or thereabouts) who lives not a million miles from you.

I haven't had any near misses, but I had a close encounter with Julia Sibary (my year in 2's) back in 1994.

We had just come back from 4 years in the US and couldn't get back into our house in Amersham for a few months so we rented in Hastings and I bumped into Julia at the primary school gates. I wouldn't have recognised her if she hadn't been wearing a CH scarf.

Dear Old Blue

I begin with an abject apology for the lack of activity in the Kent Section of the Old Blues Club over the past few years. This letter is an attempt to revive what Keith Minter had dubbed the Kent County Old Blues, or COBS – and which he had run so well.

There appears to be support for a programme of informal gatherings – what are sometimes referred to as “meetings of opportunity” and I put forward some suggestions to which I invite your reactions.

The majority of OBs are retired and are, in general, able to attend gatherings both during the day and in the evening during the week and also at weekends. Those who are still working probably find evenings and weekends more convenient. As for the choice of event, some may prefer an informal pub or restaurant meal, while others may wish for a more formal event, possibly with a guest speaker.

I would be grateful if you would let me know your preferences by downloading and filling in the proforma as a Word document [72KB] or in PDF format [36KB] and returning it to me at the address on the form. I will then attempt to arrange a meeting at the most acceptable time and place, and will also be able to judge what may be appropriate in future. There are some funds which have continued to gain interest and which can serve as a float in the event of a larger function.

I began with an apology. When I agreed to take over from Keith Minter, it was with some reluctance, but even then I had no idea of how busy my life would become in other ways. Family and work commitments effectively ruled out most other activities such as this and continue to draw heavily on my time, and I apologize again for having neglected the Kent Old Blues.

If you have read this far, you’ll realize by now that this is a plug for a new Organiser. If anyone feels able to take on what, despite my feeble excuses, is not a particularly onerous task, please let me know.

Do you get the Old Blue?

I downloaded a form and filled it in some time ago but heard nothing in response.

I've never attended an Old Blue gathering such as Kent COBs and thus have no idea what the form is or whether such meetings are formal or informal in nature.

It would appear from Geoffrey's letter that the majority of attendees are GOBS (Geriatric Old Blues - no offence I'm not far off!) rather than YOBS.

Maybe with at least 3 of us from Kent on the forum at least one of whom is young we should try to start / resurrect something between us.

What do you think Amy, Gilly and any other undeclared Kent "lurkers?"

We come to Kent every summer, and will be there for 3 weeks in 2008 (early to mid-August) so could meet up and swell numbers. Even though I'm usually a DOG, I could be a guest COB for a couple of weeks.

Ahhh CJ i would love to meet you. As for propostiton-we could have a go at getting something going. I think the main thing to get sorted is rough numbers and format. I would prefer something casual to start with.

Thank you all for responding to my post - I went on holiday the next day, so have not responded.

I sent a form back to Kent COBS ages ago, in response to the letter you have printed here, Geoffrey, but haven't been to any gatherings since then.

While not exactly a young OB, I am still working so don't think I'm a GOB yet. I would welcome some sort of informal gathering - we had a few when Keith ran the COBs and they were enjoyable,

Just think; if you had met up with Angela then I suspect you would not have posted here and would not have come across all the other Hertford "fugatives".


As no doubt you realise, Angela seems to be having access problems at thew moment but she will be back (we hope!)

I'm catching up with all the Forum I've missed for a couple of months.

I just can't believe you've moved to Headcorn. Amazing co-incidence. The houses in Church Walk are utterly charming - you've definitely chosen the nicest place in the village! I'm just sorry that we couldn't have got together..

I note that you've been to Curds and Whey, Headcorn Deli. The cheeses there are terrific. Some time ago, *sejintenej instructed us in the art of making a delicious version of Carnation Milk, which so reminded me of the Norwegian cheese gjetost that I ran to Curds and Whey to try to buy some... with a digestive biscuit, mmm... but they didn't have it. Many other goodies though, in a ripe state.

So - hope you will be happy in Headcorn. XXX!
