What's going on with the Bax Castle?

Post by Great Plum »

Can anyone tell me what they are playing at with the Bax? (For those who don't know, it's the well loved pub just outside CH frequented by many staff and where the infamous 'Bax night' is held)...

Since about October, it's closed, opened, closed, opened and closed again - it is now owned by Marston's I believe but lots of people now go down to the Boars Head as no one knows what is going on...

Perhaps a procession of flagellants to the grave of Alfred Golding Badger is called for.

Have you asked your parents, Matt?
Maybe they`ll know
I haven`t been there for about 3 years - we used to eat there quite often - nice stroll from CH, but had bad experiences with food (i.e meals arriving cold, and one time my meal didn`t appear until the rest had finished eating!) so haven`t been back since

I'm confused.....eating at the Bax?

Didn't do that in my day (not that you could get to the bar through JDS, Ron Lorimer, Terry Clark etc etc)

They built a nice little extension onto the side and it generally has a good rep for food...

However, it has changed hands and was bought by marston's who seem to be cocking it up - and no Sussex either on tap...

The parents don't seem to know either - they try and go just to see if it's open or not!

If it's anything like round here they will be turning it into a "gastro"-pub. all the dartboards, pool tables etc are being thrown out and lobster and mussels are being moved in.

This sounds like a job for 'super-sleuth', Richard Ruck.

He always used to have his finger on the pulse of Southern hosteleries !!

The last I heard was some six months ago when I was last there and they were in the process of 'interviewing' for a new land-lord. One of the rather attractive female bar persons seemed to believe a retired member of CH had applied for the position.

OK, seems like I'll have to don the beerstalker hat and pop up for a look.

To be honest, I haven't been there since August. We popped in on a Bank Holiday, and the staff were certainly
struggling to cope. I hear the chef say that he'd had to do 90+ covers for lunch without any help in the kitchen,
and the bar even ran out of orange juice.

As for food, I certainly remember the early '80s, when the only food to be found there was a few bars
of Dairy Milk, some peanuts and a couple of packets of crisps.

Anyway, I'll report back a.s.a.p. :drinkers:
