I have started a new thread, this is really

"If a man speaks, and there isn't a woman to hear him, is he still wrong?"

actually i lie, i was a member of Latin club at priamary school, and i can sing 'happy birthday' and 'twinkle twinkle little star' in latin... then there's some really handy words that i can remember, like the latin for "whale" or "hat"...Urgh-My-Pancreas wrote:no matter!

As far as I'm concerned, Latin is a DEAD language.

Well there's a subject to debate: Is Latin a dead language? Horticulturists and medical sorts, among others, might argue no.J.R. wrote:At the risk of getting my wrist slapped by Josh.....

Define Latin!!! What about variants and dialects? If you allow those then you have to accept that the current use of Ladin (which my wife's neice and nephew spoke at school) makes Latin a live language.cj wrote:Well there's a subject to debate: Is Latin a dead language? Whether Latin is any real use is another matter. Plants could just as easily be given Esperanto names and more Chinese could be used in medicine. Many trades / crafts use foreign languages - opera is often in Italian, classical dance uses French ..........
Peeps say that a knowledge of Latin is useful (some say essential) when learning certain languages; my experience is that it is useless for at least 3 "latin" languages though I can't speak for Romanian or Italian.

Jealous to the max - I don't know either song in latin! You'll have to sing them when you get here so I can learn them.Urgh-My-Pancreas wrote:actually i lie, i was a member of Latin club at priamary school, and i can sing 'happy birthday' and 'twinkle twinkle little star' in latin... then there's some really handy words that i can remember, like the latin for "whale" or "hat"...Urgh-My-Pancreas wrote:no matter!

Vital to Read
I've got a treasured copy of "Winnie Ille Pu". Winnie ille Pu sub nomine Sandersi solus in silva habitabat!
On the cover, a classical bust of Pooh draped in a toga and garlanded with laurels.
Io vivat Pu
Es tu?
Est Pu!
Umbellae gubernator
Et Poci liberator!
Vetule, stulte urse!

Didn't Queenie give a dramatic reading of "Winnie Ille Pu"? Am I dreaming or remembering?

Did She?
I don't remember Queenie reading it to us, but she may have to you! Caroline remembers her reading "Ferdinand the Bull"!
My copy of Winnie Ille Pu was given to me by Miss Mercer. It has her tiny tiny signature in the front cover. So charming!

Re: Becomming a New Dep
RIGHT!putting the latin class to one side for the moment, i have yet another question!!!
Whis other schools does CH tend to play matches and games against? this can be in anything, rugby, cricket, chess... anything! does it tend to be other private schools or lots of them, because one of my best friends is going to this other boarding school in sussex and it would be cool if i would get the oppertunity to see him from time to time!
thanks!
