What does Ajarn mean? I notice that he also called himself Ajarn Phil but then he also referred to Ajarn Terry. So it sounds like it might be something like "Mr", except that you refer to "Mrs Ajarn" sometimes, although I know that's a bit tongue in cheek. I've wondered before now, but not got round to asking

Jo, "Ajarn" doesn't quite translate literally - in the context of my work it means teacher or professor (it doesn't apply to schoolteachers), but it can also be guide, or master in a spiritual sense - the best example I can give is from Kung Fu (the 70s TV series) - remember Glasshopper talking to the blind old wise man? He called him 'Master' - if he'd been speaking Thai, he'd have called him 'Ajarn'. (Who is Ajarn Terry?).

More generally, my students call me many things, and occasionally just my name. 'Ajarn Philip' is the most usual, followed by 'teacher', then 'kruu Philip' (teacher) and finally Philip. One of the quirks of teaching here is that you get old-fashioned respect from the students. Sounds great, but one of the drawbacks of that is that I tend to hear what students think I want to hear rather than what I ask for.

Thanks - makes sense now. Ajarn Terry was someone referred to on Ajarn Phil's website, so I assume he's another local English teacher.

Hell's teeth in a bucket, now I'm seriously concerned - if there is anyone else on here who thinks I'm Bangkok/Ajarn Phil, please disillusion yourself of the idea immediately! I know for a fact that there are a lot of areas in which we think similarly, but I also know that there are vast differences!
