Old Blue February 2009

Post by jhopgood »

Bit late in the day, but the deadline for material for the next Old Blue is the end of this month.
The last article to be included will be the report on the Carol Concert. If anyone who is going wants to take photos or write a small piece, please contact Jo Sidebottom or myself.

Even later in the day BUT

1. Why the very expensive paper - possibly at the expense of more space and

2. There doesn't seem to be any room for correspondence, particularly updates on previous obituaries.

Curmudgeonly I know but I far preferred and could betetr identify with the OB section at the end of the Blue as it used to be.

Happy to reply briefly

Taking you points in reverse order

The school decided to produce the Blue annually whilst the CH Club had committed to Old Blues that they would receive a magazine semi-annually. The school could not produce news semi-annually, hence separate magazines.

Correspondence is included in the relevant section, since it frequently refers to a previous magazine. Updates on previous obituaries are nearly always included in the Remembering section.

It was decided that the Old Blue is part of the family of CH magazines and should have the same quality as the Blue. Hence the paper etc. The only difference, apart from content, is that the Blue is an unusual size, whilst the Old Blue is a standard A4. This is in part, because the Blue is mainly had distributed, whilst the Old Blue is mailed to over 7,000 readers. In fact, the main cost for the Old Blue is postage, not production costs.

My eye was caught immediately by the smashing portrait on the cover, of three children by Benedict Rubbra.

I flipped immediately to the review of Jenny Pery's book Point of Balance. I must try and get hold of this! The book is "lavishly illustrated". I'd like to see more of his paintings.

I like his work very much. His portraits are very sensitive. His abstracts dance with light. I'll certainly get the book when I can.

I remember he took an art class for Nell Todd when I was in my first year at CH. I don't think we made it easy for him.

Benny Rubbra used to inhabit what Nell Todd called "Old Men's Corner" in the Art School. He was her pride and joy. An art grecian's special timetable was very special indeed, a one-off in fact. He must have been in the Art School in his corner about 20 lessons a week, while the rest of the place was taken up by very noisy juniors.
