Dirty minds?

Post by midget »

The devil finds work for idle hands! Lewes council is all set to "ban street namesthat lend themselves to a double entendre. The guidelines involve buying new software for street naming" names capable of deliberate misinterpretation are to be avoided. Examples are Hoare Road, Typple Avenue, Quare Street, and my favourite Corfe Close (4 Corfe Close) Thewriter said she had to read the last bit 3 times before she realised what she was supposed to be offended by!
I trust the good people of Lewes will know how to dealwith there iidiots at the next election.

I've always regarded governments and councils in the same way as I do referees.

The best are the ones you don't see.

Sadly, because of idiots such as you describe, they have an unfortunate habit of being evermore visible!

The irony is that as their real power decreases (EU Regs etc) their visibility increases.

It's a shame because Lewes is a really beautiful town !

Shame about the Council, but unfortunately all are going the same way ?

Littlejohn in the Daily Mail will have a field-day.

and just what is wrong with making sure that street names are not offensive?

Not that I think Typple Close is offensive.

You'd really have to be actively trying to be offended to work out that Corfe Close was a problem simply because of no. 4. My partner has the most schoolboy sense of humour I have ever encountered in a grown man, sees double entendres where there are none, and even he didn't get that one until I explained it to him. I understand your sentiments Mary, but it does seem like the people behind it have too much time on their hands.

Mind you, when you do work it out, 4 Corfe Close is quite funny. Or maybe it's just my juvenile sense of humour - I've been living with Chris too long

As you all know, I'm a footy admin freak.

Some time ago, I attended a match at which Scunthorpe were playing. The brother of one of our managers played for them at the time. Scunthorpe were playing badly, and from the other side of the ground, a chant slowly began. It took a few moments to realise the chant was.

"Who put the c***t in Scunthorpe ? Who put the c***t in Scunthorpe ? Who put the c***t in Scunthorpe ?"

Now here's a village in Western france called CONDOM! More ironically the village is on the boards of a river called "Baise"
and if any of you know good idiomatic French this means "F***"!!!

OOOPs :)

Le village en un clin d'oeil

7 251 habitants
Altitude moyenne : 125 m
Lat. 48.84° - Long. -2.18°

Construite sur les bords de la Baïse, la ville de Condom se développa rapidement au Moyen-Âge.

I don't believe it.

If you happen to live in Scunthorpe, you can't print your town on here. The automatic censor jumps in.

Having read the Guardian piece, they have missed a couple of lovely ones in Pennsylvania, you can go from Blue Balls to Intercourse. BTW I don't find any of it offensive except the c and f words, I live with a 55 year old like Jo's Chris and 20 and 23 year old blokes

Near to me is a road entitled BARTERS LANE -- some Wag, (Not I, M'Lud ! ) constantly alters the B to an F by the use of a couple of stokes of Tipex, ------ Schoolboy Humour, but some elderly residents have told me that it raises a smile !

When i was young there was a sign by a river on the A22 which informed drivers that they were going over the "River Uck"

Naturally the letter "F" was regularly added

They eventually got rid of the sign altogether

Actually I think the original sign had a big gap between the River word and the Uck word and they made a new sign designed in such a way that people didnt have space to put the F in. Perhaps they had the Uck below the River and the edge of the sign followed the shape of the words so theres no white space before the Uck. To think how much time went into thinking this one out in Uckfield council!
