Re: Honours List
Regarding Sir Bob Geldof and others - I can't understand why the Queen can bestow a Knighthood, which technically, the recipient cannot use !
Weird - Really Weird !!

The list for les Legionnaires d'Honneur has been published this morning and of course there are a fair amount of celebrities from cinema and sport who figure.
Even a British citizn has been nominated for "chevalier ". None other than John Galliano, Dior head designer.
I wonder if the French ever receive OBEs or the like in our system?[/quote]
I'm not sure of the ranks of the Legionnaires d'Honneur but I know that a lot of British people have received one of those awards, often for bravery and especially after WWII. I knew one Brit who earned it - whilst in the Legion Etranger
In the case of Britain, should we not be able to give a gong to a foreigner who carries out an act either in the UK or for the benefit of the UK or one/some of its citizens? It was felt that an Irish subject (who I think was resident in the UK at the time) deserved a knighthood (rather than some lesser award) for organising BandAid etc. You can argue either way as to whether it was deserved - he was given it. The rules state that he cannot use the title "Sir"; you can argue if that rule is correct until the cows come home for all I care.

Having more money doesn't make you happier. I have 50 million dollars
but I'm just as happy as when I had 48 million.

Re: Honours List
Since this Topic is about "Honours" and Commonwealth Citizens, ----- The Gurkhas have received loads of Honours, from the innumerable V.Cs etc. for bravery, to the "Lower Rank" B.Es
I wonder how ANY Government can appeal to the High Court, to REVERSE it's decision to allow those who retired prior to 1997 to settle in this Country ------ all 1500 of them -- what an incredible number, it falls rather short of the Illegal immigrants who have NOT been deported !
I believe than pretty-well every Ex- Soldier, who has had anything to do with the Girkhas is appalled.
We have a Gurkha Restaurant nearto us --- Which has been forbidden to fly the crossed Kukri flag. --- I remarked to one of the Staff "Of all the people I wouldn't want to annoy ---- I think a Gurkha rates pretty highly !"
He said nothing, but smiled quietly ! !

Re: Honours List
The night wardens at my daughter's Uni residence are both former Gurhhas, lovely, lovely men (so she tells me)

Re: Honours List
A couple of years ago, Jan and I were enjoying a pub lunch with a friend just outside Brighton, when four men, obviously foreign of asiatic appearance entered. All were smartly dressed, wearing casual suits and what I first took to be school ties,
It transpired they were all senior Gurkha Warrant Officers. They were charming, polite and so very proud to be serving Her Majesty. Thy had been taking part in a display over the weekend at Hickstead.
Gurkhas deserve anything and everything this Country can give them.
