Share your memories and stories from the Hertford Christ's Hospital School, which closed in 1985, when the two schools integrated to the Horsham site....
Across the way from the school and station is another piece of co-ordinated architecture (if you knew where I lived you'd sympathise with this fixation), namely the Dolphin pub. When I turned my eyes from the station on my last visit this inspired another reverie.
I've never quite got over the shock of discovering that girls from the grammar school in my home town thought nothing of popping into the local down the bottom of the road from their school of a lunchtime .
I wonder, did the internees at Hertford enjoy any sort of relationship with the Dolphin or was it too strictly monitored?
How on earth did you manage that, Vonny? In my day (!!!) local tradesmen were in the habit of reporting back to the school if they saw anybody obviously belonging to the school doing anything remotely 'iffy'. So no visits to the pub, or even an apparently out-of-the-way off-licence, or nipping over the back gate. In fact on one occasion when I was out on a walk I was reported to my housemistress for putting some money in a chewing gum machine, reported that is by the slightly more senior girls that I was on the walk with. And would you believe the offence had nothing to do with chewing gum being considered a filthy habit - I shouldn't have had the penny that I put into the machine, because all money had to be handed into the housemistress!
My first taste of alcohol (other than the odd sip at home) was in fact at the Boars Head just after the girls moved to Horsham Gin & tonic to be exact!
You dark horse - I didn't know you did things like escape over the back gate
