In ThB we had Short Peeles and Long Peeles. A Short Peele involved running down the back road, around Peele A and back down the Avenue, took about 3 minutes. A Long Peele took in the copse behind Whites and returned via West Gun Copse road. These were thought in the end to be hardly sufficient, and were replaced by the "Triangle": down the Centre Path to the Post Office and back via King Edward's Road and the Back Road.

'Miles' and 'Quarters' were certainly handed out as punishments in Coleridge B.

Not sure what a quarter was - in Col A we had P O Paths which was from the house to the gate before the Swimming Pool and back plus a change. ISTR it had to take a bit under 5 minutes. No way was that a quarter mile - more like half a mile.

That's the one David.

We all knew it was more than a quarter. Some referred to it as a 'Quarter', and others as a 'Post-Office'.

Barnes B punishments were:

Loop 5 minutes (probably the most demanding as the run in and out is almost as long as the loop)
Mile - 8 minutes
Long Mile (Mile but starting or ending by going around the external path of the loop) 10 minutes
Double Mile - 16 minutes

Can't remember doing any of them in the snow, but do remember doing a run in the 1963 snow and ending up waist deep in snow because of an invisible ditch. Very cold water at the bottom.
I have a feeling that because of the tarmac surface of the mile etc, and the constant foot traffic, the mile was relatively snow free, although icy.

Lost count of how many of theses punishments I did whilst in Barnes B (some given by jhopgood), but I got to enjoy them in the end and they were certainly good fitness training.
What needs adding is that you had to find a monitor to start the timing and then find the same monitor to report to on your return, all within the alloted time.

Oh what a pity --- I left Ba B in 1946 --- otherwise I might have been able to give J Hopgood a loop or two !

I think all who were Monitors when I was being given punishments, which included being beaten with a knotted Girdle are now, all dead !
Which only goes to prove the power of Prayer ! !

No, I'm only joking --- especially if any are still alive -- I believe some served in "Odd Units " during the War !

Just to keep the record straight, I probably deserved all the punishments I was given. (I can hear the nodding of heads from my contempories who post on the forum).
