'Black' and 'White' being described as colours.
Actually, they are shades, as the late great Nell Todd quickly drummed into us.

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
Strictly in physical terms, White is the ABSENCE of colour, and BLACK is the absence of light. Neither are either colours OR shades.
But it depends what you are talking about.

I love the sign outside my Doctor's surgery - a painted sign, stuck on a tree :-
PATIENT PARKING
I keep on wanting to ask what 'impatient parking' would be?

Re: The Pedant's Revolt
I was at the East Surrey Hospital, Redhill yesterday with Jan.
Amongst other tests, was a blood-test, Needless to say, the wait was long. There were notices around the department apologising for the delays, and asked people...
"Please be Patient".
A Victor Meldrew type guy walked in, sat down next to me, huffed and muttered, "I am a feckin' patient - Get a move on !"
I just loved that guy !!!
