Re: Interesting or funny links
I didn't watch the show but I did see Stavros Flatley on Youtube, extremely funny, but perhaps a one-trick pony. Maybe that is what is needed as Susan Boyle (who according to today's Mail has a minor learning disability after being starved of oxygen at birth and is known as Susie Simple to locals in Bathgate) will hardly need the additional exposure.

Re: Interesting or funny links
I've just caught up on this thread and the Susan Boyle story (slightly behind the times as usual...) - I have just watched her performance on the above link, and I thought it was stunning. Of particular interest to me was watching the faces of the judges and audience when she said, when asked her amibiton, that she wanted to sing like Elaine Page (or something similar). You could see the disbelief on everyone's face; how could this fat, frumpy, middle-aged female possibly make such an outrageous statement? And then to watch their faces as she began to sing, to listen to the response they gave her - that is what gave me most satisfaction of all.
This sort of programme is one of the things I don't miss about the UK. I don't mean that entirely unkindly; if I were there I would probably be watching it, and the fact that I don't have that option is one of the things I'm grateful for...
I wish her the very best of luck. My immediate fear was of exploitation and manipulation. I think she has probably achieved her dream already. If it goes further, I sincerely hope it's on her own terms.

I hope you heard her 1999 CD performance. As for exploitation, Cowell has the contractural right to sign up any act that he wants to and prevent all other acts signing up with others for a certain period of time. I reckon that that is potentially manipulation.Ajarn Philip wrote:I've just caught up on this thread and the Susan Boyle story (slightly behind the times as usual...) - I have just watched her performance on the above link,

I also understand that the programme has arranged for her to be accompanied by her brother and a researcher to protect her.

Re: Interesting or funny links
Long time ago somebody posted a link to a screen which was in this area. It is well worth exploring the next level up which has a wealth of amusing stuff. I would single out as worthy of exploring the "No kissing in Warrington" and the +/- 19 screens which follow it as well as the rest of those which are called "Weird".

I just hoped that, standing on the stage with light shining in her face, she was not able to actually see the facial expressions and grimaces of the judges as she introduced herself and answered questions before she began to sing. I cringed with embarrassment on her behalf.....

Yes, but when you heard her sing, you cheered and wept with joy! More power to her elbow, and to all those many hundreds and thousands like her.kerrensimmonds wrote: I cringed with embarrassment on her behalf.....

Re: Interesting or funny links
I cringed when I saw how the judges reacted to her, not at her - irrespective of how she subsequently performed. I wanted to bang their heads together and lecture them about things like courtesy and politeness - then I just prayed that she had not been able to see how they had reacted to her at first. Then I heard her sing - and that's a different story.

Looks as though our Susan is into the Finals then! Did anyone watch it?

Is this the girl/woman with the really fantastic voice ?CHAZ wrote:Looks as though our Susan is into the Finals then! Did anyone watch it?
I thought Graham Norton was exceptionally rude about her on his show last week.
I fear he's joining the Jonathon Woss/Russell (should be) BRANDed brigade.

Re: Interesting or funny links
I watched it and I thought she was very good - off key at the start but I'm sure that was nerves. She deserved to go through, as did Diversity, but I also wanted Faces of Disco to go through because they were brilliant! The Hot Honeyz are on tonight, and my best friend's daughter is one of the dancers. JR, you are going to LOVE their costumes (or lack of them!) They're up against Flawless and some good singers though

Give them a minute
I wonder what Simon Cowell would have said.
Piers Morgan would probably have had a stroke.
