Motorway Signs

Post by Katharine »

Today I drove home from Cambridge, using the A14, M6, M6 Toll and M54 before reaching Wales. It was the first time I had used this route by myself. To my surprise the M54 was not signposted from the M6 Toll. Fortunately I had asked when I paid my toll. I was told to leave at T8, which I did, that was signed as Telford and M1 South. Very soon I picked up signs to M54.

Who should I complain to about the lack of a sign on M6 Toll?

I have just sent an email to the Highways Agency - one of the volunteers at work this week works with the Birmingham Highways Dept and he advised that. I'll let you know if I hear anything!

Several of my colleagues have had problems because there is no sign.

We go from one end to the other and I think we may come to bless the toll road as daughter has just had a very good offer from Edge Hill University (Ormskirk) which is where we went on the snowy day.

Once she goes though I don't think she willcome back too often, well perhaps to see her brothers.

I used the toll road last night at 9ish, the whole length north to south. I drove past only about half a dozen vehicles, all of them mail delivery trucks and was overtaken by about the same number of cars. It was very pleasant to have 15 miles or so of very easy motoring, after the "joys" of driving up the M6 that morning and the large number of goods vehicles travelling in convoy further north between Knutsford and the toll road earlier in the evening.

Spent half the day sampling the dubious delights of the new "Euterpeville".

Hardly a direction sign in sight. Plenty of threats though - "have you paid and displayed?" "Charge to have wheel clamp removed £250 plus £50 at night and £5 for using plastic card for payment" and the like. "No parking" etc etc.

Took ages to find my way out and yes, depite the strong wind blowing down the high street, even I could smell the cooking oil.

BTW Barbara, there is an extremely helpful and knowledgeable woman behind the counter in the library; just tell her that her fame has spread to Spain!

As promised, here are a few of their responses:

I very much doubt T8 northbound would be signed as M1 south, and as for Telford, well that's along the M54.

Problem is, the M6 Toll goes round the M54, so getting to it is not as simple as you'd think. There are plans to link the two up though.

As for complaining, I'd presume the M6 Toll Website would be a good place to start.

Actually, T8 is signed as "Wolverhampton (M6 South)". Telford is signed straight on via M6 J12, A5 and A449.

As to why the signage is so rubbish? No idea, but neither Wolverhampton nor M54 is signed at M6 J3a, which is complete rubbish as to go via M6 Toll you need to come back on yourself...

Isn't staying onto the M6 and getting off at J12 and following the oad to the M54 easier and more practical (if not quicker)

The signing here is rubbish.

The best way I've found is to leave the M6toll at T8, over the M6 at junc 11 and join the M54 at junc 1 (follow the A460). The M54 isn't signed from the Toll, but i beleve from the slip road runabout. I've had many annoying detours hear, and the lack of a direct link is one factor in me not using the Toll.

Friendly warning, mind the 40 limit and the 3 speed cameras on the 460.

So there are the road geeks' responses!

yes it was signed from there, but should have been signed from the M6Toll

Friendly warning, mind the 40 limit and the 3 speed cameras on the 460. Well nothing has reached me yet about speeding!

Thanks for this Matt, I've added my comments onto some of theirs. Why is it that so many people agree that the signage is rubbish but nothing happens. I have not had a response from the Highways Agency, may try the M6 website now - hadn't realised they had one!
