Band At London 2012

Just wondering what peoples opinions were about the band performing at the opening ceremony of our next olympic games. Theres been word floating around that it is a distinct possibility - and that we would be more favoured due to our links with the city than other school marching bands - say for example the Duke of Yorks Military School Band. Trying to fathom some juicy conversation starters.

Early days yet for that sort of planning I should think. Also it is in the summer holiday so do they use the 'old' band or the 'new' band? Having said that, if they are invited and I was in the 'old' band I would definitely want to take part. And would need to know now before I planned my holidays/gap year.

First positive thing is that there are no military overtones. Second - youth. Yes, they could go for a well established marching / static band (Grimethorp comes to mind) but CH with experience of Beating Retreat, Lords, Twickenham................. has as much experience. Thirdly; it is not rich spoilt brats but a real cross section of UK youth even if not one of them is actually competing.

Old or new band? If Big is Best (we had three separate marching bands in the City in 1953) why not "old" plus "new". I'm not sure of the dates but the two together should be feasible, or at least those of both who haven't been whisked away to Aya Napa or Cannes. The options for countermarching are numerous

27th July - 12 August 2012 for the Olympic Games and 29th August - 9th September 2010 for the Paralympic Games. So, ceremonies on each of those 4 dates.

I think it's a great idea..... but we're all just a little bit biased aren't we?

Many of the 'new' would be in the 'old' anyway. From what I have heard of the young people leaving CH I would think Namibia and Nepal are more likely destinations than Ayia Napa and Cannes.

Of course, but why not get every single person who is available. It might be that the bands will have different compositions for each of the four events but I would have thought that it would be such an event that there would be strong competition to be in the band(s) IF CH is chosen.
OTOH I know that CH had a thing against pupils being involved in prestigious events in the past so this idea may be shot down by the Council or Headmaster before it gathers any head of steam.

I was thinking more of those sampling the gin palaces than those roughing it after the luxuries of CH

I was at CH so no way could I afford either Aya Napa (but I have a friend who has an apartment nearby) or Cannes (though I was once treated to an ice cream on La Croisette by a lady who has a clothes shop there).

So, think something else (or tell me what I was thinking because I'm merely a male ).

I think that the 'old' band would be chosen, since, as well as experience, they would have the whole term before that for rehearsals (maybe even before then). I think it would be great if they could play at the Olympics, it would be another prestigious event.

Would the Council veto attendance at "Prestigious Events" ? --- that would rule ot leading the Lord Mayor ?????
